A saw palmetto field, under drought conditions.
The beauty of a saw palmetto fan. The plant is very dried out, however.
These grasshoppers, we were told, are medium sized: they are about 4" long (as big as a child's closed fist). That means they get even bigger. The insect's colors are not "attractive" to most predators, so they do not get eaten all that often. This allows them to grow very large.
Pine trees are mixed in with the semi-tropical vegetation.
Dry, dry dry.

Shells may found scattered throughout trails at the preserve.
