Description: 2000-foot elevation. 2 RV sites and a picnic area near the south end of Applegate Lake. Swimming and fishing in the lake. Trailhead for horse riders, mountain bikers, dirt bikers, and hikers. The trail climbs steadily through a mixed conifer forest at a moderate grade to Elliott Ridge. Views from the ridge display the dramatic differences between dark green forests of north slopes, while pale green and brown tones of predominantly brush and grass are seen on the south-facing slopes. The trail continues along the ridge to a crest just below Stein Butte. A short side trail to the top of Stein Butte offers excellent vistas of the Red Buttes and much of the Siskiyou Crest. The trail can be easily done as a loop.
