Description: Newberry National Volcanic Monument covers over 50,000 acres of a still-active volcano, from the high desert near bent to the 7985-foot peak of Mount Paulina, in the volcano`s caldera. A trip to the monument should start at Lava Butte, where you can get information about volcanoes and recreation at the visitor center, and get a panoramic view from the top of Lava Butte (4500 feet). Nearby, kayakers shoot the rapids formed as the Wild and Scenic Deschutes River squeezes through the lava canyons.

Farther south, visitors can explore the massive lava flows, which include an easily accessible lava cave, the petrified trees of the lava cast forest and a massive field of obsidian. In the Newberry Crater, two lakes offer fantastic fishing for trophy rainbow and brown trout, as well as Atlantic and kokanee salmon. There are seven campgrounds in the caldera, with a range of amenities. Various trails are open to hikers, mountain bikers, and horse riders. In the winter, two sno-parks on County Road 21 open groomed trails to Nordic skiers. Roads are closed in winter to all motorized vehicles except snowmobiles. Thermal vents and hot springs border each of the lakes, indicating the ongoing geothermal activity which created this landscape.

Location: From Bend, go south along US 97. The Lava Lands Visitor Center is 13 miles south; access to other areas is off Forest Road 9702, FR 9710, FR 9720, FR 9705, and County Road 21 (to Newberry Caldera).
