Description: This road loops through an area of Oregon which was one of the first to see steady traffic from American emigrants. Baker City was an important stop on the Oregon Trail, the ensuing gold rush swelled the population, then logging created a permanent industry. From Baker City, the road goes north along the forest edge, then climbs up into the Blue Mountains. The Anthony Lakes, a group of placid mountain lakes, lie towards the top, and a trailhead here access the adjacent North Fork John Day Wilderness. From the wilderness the Wild and Scenic North Fork John Day River flows, and the road crosses the river on the way back down to Baker City and the Powder River Valley.

On the southern half of the loop, the passes through several old mining towns, which still support small communities of residents. Near the town of Sumpter, a gold dredge from the 1930`s rests in the Powder River, a one of the reminders of the millions of gold mined in this area. The byway parallels the Powder River from Sumpter back to Baker City. Campgrounds are located near the Anthony Lakes, Blue Springs Summit and Phillips Lake. Trailheads also line the route, including one at Blue Springs Summit for an ATV trail. In the winter, Blue Springs Summit is also a popular destination for cross-country skiiers and snowmobilers.

History buffs will enjoy spending some time in Baker City, at the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center and the Eastern Oregon Museum.
