Description: The Wild and Scenic Metolius River flows 28.6 miles from the
Metolius Spring in the Deschutes National Forest, forms the forest boundary, and empties into Lake Billy Chinook. The Metolius is one of the largest spring-fed rivers in the country. The upper 11.5 miles, within the Deschutes, is a popular destination for whitewater boating, catch and release flyfishing, and camping. Only hatchery rainbow trout, kokanee salmon, and whitefish may be taken from the river. The lower 17 miles, on the boundary of the Warm Springs Indian Reservation, is a primitive area with no motorized access. Facilities along the upper river include a number of developed campgrounds, trailheads, and picnic areas as well as a fish viewing platform. A wheelchair-accessible nature trail is at Metolius Springs, interpreting the headwaters of the Metolius. Boaters put in at Riverside Campground and float down to the lake, enjoying thrilling Class III-IV rapids. A number of restrictions apply to fishing the Metolius; check the Oregon State regulations or contact the PLIC before
fishing.
Location: From Sisters, go about 9.5 miles northwest on US 20/OR 126, then s north 4 - 32 miles on Forest Road 14.
