Description: The Wild and Scenic Lostine River flows from the high peaks of the Eagle Cap Wilderness, following the U-shaped curve of a classic glacial cirque. The upper five miles, inside the wilderness boundary, are designated as wild, and the remaining 11 miles are designated for their recreational value. The river is surrounded by meadows and high mountain peaks.

Recreation in the river corridor includes hunting, fishing, wildlife watching, horseback riding, hiking, skiing, and camping. Facilities include developed campgrounds, picnic areas, and Forest Service rental cabins. If you prefer a more solitary experience, trailheads along the river corridor lead into the wilderness. Mule deer, elk, and black bear inhabit the canyon, along with Rocky Mountain sheep. The river also supports a good anadromous fishery. Fishing for trout, salmon, and steelhead; artificial flies and lures required.

Location: From the town of Lostine, take County Road 551 and Forest Road 8250 south, paralleling the river.
