Description: The 27-mile long Wild and Scenic Eagle Creek River starts in a glacial cirque high in the Wallowa Mountains. The first four miles, designated as wild, flow down the steep slopes of the Eagle Cap Wilderness and are characterized by waterfalls, mixed conifer forests, and glacially-carved scenery. At the wilderness border, the river flattens and slows into a 6-mile drop and pool stretch, then picks up below the confluence with West Eagle Creek. In the lower 17 miles, the river canyon narrows, with steep walls towering up to 1000 feet above the water. The vegetation transistions from the subalpine forests to patchy stands of ponderosa pines mixed with rocky uplands and plateaus.

Fishing for stocked rainbow trout, hiking on the 6-mile Martin Bridge Trail, wilderness hiking or horseback riding, and snowmobiling in winter, are all popular activities. Numerous developed facilities on the lower 23 miles include campgrounds, group camping, and rental cabins.

Location: From Baker City, go 36 miles east on OR 86, then north about 8 miles on County Road 969, and up to 22 miles north on Forest Road 77.
