Description: 6,040-foot elevation. When Powell first named this area, he could hardly have envisioned this remote wilderness becoming such a popular destination. 42,000 acres of varied forests surrround the gorge itself, which is renowned for its fish-filled waters and its colorful canyon walls. Extremely popular area for motorboating, sightseeing and camping. Blue-ribbon fishing for rainbow trout, kokanee salmon, and smallmouth bass. Ranger guided tours of the dam are available, and there are three visitor centers for those seeking enlightenment. A pleasant river run can be had in the seven-mile strech of the Green River below the dam, and there are many trails in the area to tempt bikers and hikers. An interesting historical site is the Oscar Swett Ranch, homesteaded in 1919, and abandoned in 1971. It is 1.5 miles west of the Greendale campground, and volunteer caretakers live there all summer and offer visitor information and tours.

Location: 20 miles north of Vernal on UT-44 and US 191.
