Description: Six miles west of Cody, the byway begins with Buffalo Bill Reservoir State Park, an excellent trout fishing area, and just gets better. The entire way, the road follows the North Fork of the Shoshone River, passing through the Wapiti Valley of the Shoshone National Forest, whose historic ranger station stands as a monument to the longstanding public use of the forest. The most famous historic attraction comes from its namesake, Buffalo Bill Cody. Internationally famous for his wild west shows, he is locally famous for developing the Cody area. He spearheaded the effort to irrigate the valley from the Shoshone River, and on this route, built his "Pahaska Teepees" hunting lodge, where he entertained dignitaries and cronies from around the world.
This valley is rife with wildlife, and you may glimpse elk, bison, bear, moose, deer, osprey, eagles, and many other critters as you drive. Geologic attractions inlcude the hot springs at Demaris Springs in the Shoshone River, and steep granite and sedimentary formations in the canyon, with colorful names such as Laughing Pig, Holy City, and Old Woman. A number of Forest Service Campgrounds line the road.

Location: US 14-16-20 west of Cody to the east entrance of Yellowstone National Park. One way trip is 27.5 miles and takes about 45 minutes.
