Description: Devils Tower is a 1267' vertical volcanic monolith which rises above the Belle Fourche River. This 1347- acre area was declared the first National Monument by Theodore Roosevelt in 1906. Visitors enjoy crack and column climbing, camping, picnicking, sightseeing, hiking the 7 miles of trails, and generally marvelling at this geologic wonder with its long vertical ridges. The Sturgis Biker Rally is held nearby the second week of August, and the park gets very crowded. Two one-week residencies for writers are awarded every year.
Location: From I-90, exit at Sundance, and take WY 14 north to WY 24, then north to Devils Tower.
