Howard Slough Waterfowl Management Area, Utah
View Vicinity Map Recommended Maps & Books Share With a Friend
Description: The diversity of sound and color astounds visitors to this area. Thousands of waterbirds, songbirds and raptors visit this area during the migration and nesting seasons.
In February, ducks and geese start to appear, looking for food exposed by melting ice. In March and April, shorebirds and wading birds show up for he fun. Nesting begins in early March when Canada geese and great blue herons begin preparing for egg laying and incubation; most other species begin nesting between April and June. March through August is a critical time, when most birds are either sitting on eggs or attending to their young. September marks the beginning of the fall migration for waterfowl. Many ducks have already left by the time the waterfowl hunting season opens in early October. Tundra swans close out the annual migrating pilgrimage during November and December. By the end of December most bird species have moved southward. A noticeable exception is the bald eagle which winters here.
Location: From Ogden, go south on I-15 and take West Point Road west until it ends, then turn south to take the loop drive through the area.
