Description: Historically rich, these nearly 50,000 acres of solitude range up to 8300 foot elevations. The Ignacio Chavez Special Management Area lies amid the remains of an array of cultural periods. Chacoan era ruins have been uncovered and evidence of Spanish habitation during the 18th century can be found in the adobe "rancheros" that dot the area. The Special Management Area consists primarily of two Wilderness Study Areas, the 33,000 acre Ignacio Chavez WSA and the 13,700 acre Chamisa WSA.
Location: Twenty miles southwest of Cuba, NM via County Road 279 off US 550. Travel 24 miles west on CR 279 until the intersection of BLM Road 1103 and CR 25.
