Description: A favorite with photographers for its surreal, sculpted rock formations called "hoodoos", the 4000-acre Bisti Badlands was combined in 1999 with the 22,500-acre De-Na-Zin Wilderness, a series of washes and low mesas rich with fossils. The total "new" area is 45,000 acres where there are no marked trails, but it is easy to walk short distances from the parking area just off NM 371 and find yourself surrounded by the Bisti`s strange toadstools, pinnacles, small arches and otherworldly forms of eroded clay and sandstone. (It`s also easy to get lost out there, so taking a compass and the USGS Alamo Mesa East and West quads wouldn`t be a bad idea.) The De-Na-Zin country to the east is less exotic, but a great place to follow washes or wander across open country in this high desert. For more information, click here.
Location: 36 miles south of Farmington via NM 371 or travel west on CR 7500 from Huerfano Trading Post at US 550.
