Description: 9400ft elevation. Pioneer Cabin, nestled high in the Pioneer mountains, offers shelter to backpackers and skiiers. The Union Pacific Railroad company built the cabin in 1917.
The cabin can be accessed from the Pioneer Cabin Trail or from the North Fork Hyndman Creek Trail. Both hiking trails involve somewhat strenuous 2-3 mile climbs.
Wildlife viewing is great, particularly for elk. Cabin is not maintained and very rustic. Watch for critters inside. Hiking or horse riding.
Location: From Ketchum, go northeast on Forest Road 408, and east on FR 137. Park at the trailhead, and hike or ski about 3 miles. Latitude: 43.742908 Longitude: -114.190881
