Description: This grassland mostly contains shortgrass prairie. Notable sights include a prairie chicken lek, sections of the Santa Fe Trail where wagon ruts are still visible, and the Picket Wire Canyonlands, where you can see dinosaur footprints, rock art, and traces of Spanish and American settlers, like a cemetary and an old ranch. Most recreation is dispersed but there are four developed campgrounds. They are all open year round, and feature sheltered picnic areas, and nearby barrier-free trails, but none has potable water. All but Carrizo Canyon have accessible restrooms and picnic shelters. Vogel Canyon and Timpas group offer interpretive information.
Location: South of La Junta. Main roads that cross the grasslands are US 350, CO 109, and US 160.
