Description: Wilderness area includes the headwaters of the Chetco River and the North Fork of the Smith River. The rocky slopes of the Kalmiopsis rise about 5000 feet, and are carved into deep canyons by numerous rushing streams. The rocks have also given way to an unusual soil composition, which supports an abundance of plant life, some of which is found only in this area. The Illinois, Chetco, and North Fork of the Smith Rivers are all designated "wild" in their reach through this wilderness.

The 2002 Biscuit Fire caused damage to about 160 miles of trails and facilities, and visitors should be aware of hazards caused by dead or downed trees.

Location: There are several trailheads that provide access from either the Illinois Valley (from OR 199 near Selma and Cave Junction) and the Oregon Coast (from US 101 and the towns of Brookings and Gold Beach). *Most roads to trailheads are accessible by 2-wheel-drive vehicles, except for: Forest Service Road 087 from McCaleb Ranch on the Illinois River up to Chetco Pass (this is a 4x4 road requiring good clearance) and the last 1 1/2 miles on Forest Service Road 4103 (Illinois River Road) before the trailhead along Briggs Creek.   Latitude: 42.283156   Longitude: -123.963344
