Description: 64,960-acre wilderness. Formerly known as the Columbia Wilderness, this area rises up from nearly sea level, near the Gorge, up to Mount Defiance at 4900 feet. Tumbling creeks have carved deep, mossy gorges as they flow down to the Columbia River. Long, sparkling waterfalls characteristic of the Columbia River Gorge are abundant in the wilderness, although not as easily accessible as along the scenic byway. The most waterfalls, seven, are on Eagle Creek. The Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail crosses the eastern side of the wilderness, and the Eagle Creek Trail penetrates it from the north. Numerous other trails access quieter areas of the wilderness. Many trails can be done as loop hikes.

Location: Access along the Columbia Gorge from the Eagle Creek National Recreation Trail, Tanner Creek Road in Bonneville, Starvation Falls Rest Area (Mount Defiance trail), and the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail (at the Bridge of the Gods). Access from the eastern border from Rainy Lake campground and Wathum campground (the southern end of the Pacific Crest NST).
