Bull of the Woods Wilderness, Oregon
View Vicinity Map Recommended Maps & Books Wilderness.net Share With a Friend
Description: 45,080-acre wilderness. Old growth forests cover steep mountain ridges, home to northern spotted owls, along with many other bird and mammal species. The northeast quadrant contains about a dozen trout-filled mountain lakes, separated by steep ridges. In the center of the lakes is Bull of the Woods Peak (5523 feet). A number of trails cross the peak, leading to all the little lakes. A lookout on the summit offers an excellent view of the area.
Elsewhere in the wilderness, you can find ample evidence of the 19th century gold rush, in the form of abandoned mines and similar detritus. Be extremely careful around mines, and don`t try to go exploring. Just outside the wilderness, on the access trail from FR 70, is Bagby hot springs (138º F), a developed public springs with private cedar baths, cold plunges, and hot tubs. Camping is not permitted at the hot springs, but dispersed camping is allowed pretty much anywhere else.
Location: Access from Elk Lake campground or Shady Cove campground on the south side. Access from the north side, off Forest Road 6341 (to Pansy Lake), FR 70 (to Bagby Hot Springs, and along Hot Springs Creek), and FR 6380 (Elk Lake Creek, Welcome Lake).
