Description: The Donner und Blitzen Wild and Scenic River includes 72.7 miles of wild river in the Steen Mountains Resource Area, including all the major tributaries, from the headwaters to the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge boundary. The tributaries-- Little Blitzen River, South Fork Blitzen River, Big Indian Creek, Little Indian Creek, and Fish Creek-- tumble down scenic glaciated canyons, and through the highe Great Basin desert ecosystem. All the waters of the system harbor exceptional wild trout fisheries.

Wildlife watching for bighorn sheep in the Steen Mountains, wild horses in the river basin, and seasonal waterfowl and bird watching at Malheur National Wildlife Refuge. Scenic driving on the Steen Mountain Back Country byway offers a great way to visit the mountains, the river, and the wildlife. The Oregon High Desert Hiking Trail parallels the main stem of the wild and scenic river. Camping at developed campgrounds or at dispersed sites around the recreation area.


Location: Access from the Steens Mountain Back Country Byway. The river can either be reached from unimproved roads off the Byway or near South Steens Campground, where the road crosses the river.
