Description: This 149-mile segment of the mighty Missouri is the only portion
of the mighty river to be protected and preserved in its natural,
free-flowing state. It is also a substantial segment of the Lewis and
Clark National Historic Trail, flowing through country which remains
much as first described by the Corps of Discovery. As the trade
expanded and settlers moved west, steamboats tramped up and down this
mighty river, the main highway west for much of the 19th century.
Trading posts sprang up along the river, trading with the natives and
provisioning increasing numbers of whites. After the Civil War,
railroads were finally constructed all across the country. The
steamboats and the forts disappeared, the few homesteaders who had
staked out along its banks sought greener pastures, and now the wide
Missouri has became once again the province of ducks and fish.
While Lewis & Clark had a rough time going upstream, they found,
as will you, that it is easily navigable in a canoe or other craft
headed downstream. As you head down the river, use the BLM map to
note the many formations in the Missouri Breaks which were landmarks
for so many voyagers. If you get off the river and hike around, you
will find many traces of times past, from homesteader`s cabins to
native American artifacts. Leave all sites as you found them.
Portions of the river pass through the Charles M Russell National
Wildlife Refuge, and though you may not see the abundant beaver and
bighorn sheep of 200 years ago, you will encounter plenty of
wildlife, particularly raptors, along the route.
Floaters usually travel the river in segments of 1 to 70 miles. A
floaters`
guide from Fort Benton to James Kipp Recreation Area is available
online.
Location: Designated stretch is the Upper Missouri River from Fort Benton downriver to the Fred Robinson Bridge on US 191. Total distance 174 miles.
