Description: 53 mile one way trip. This route was established by the Southern Nez Perce, as a trail used to travel from the Camas Prairie in Idaho to the Bitterroot Valley in Montana. Sites along the way include the town of Clearwater (6.6 miles from Harpster, the starting point, and the cemetery at Newsome (30.4 miles in). A map is available from the forest service, which highlights the points of interest. Elk City is a full-service community with hotels, restaurants, and gas stations. Every year there is an adventure tour of the old wagon road from Clearwater to Elk City. The road trip ends with dinner and entertainment in the Elk City Community Park. Last year the trip was 4-day horse and wagon ride with camping and food supplied and entertainment each night.
