Description: The Clarks Fork carves a path from the Beartooth Mountains in the north to the Absaroka Range. Beginning just east of Yellowstone, it flows southeast, then curves through a deep canyon to head northeast into Montana and its convergence with the main channel of the Yellowstone near Billings.
Early on, the river runs through narrow gorges, which along with frequent waterfalls which make the river impassable in this segment. It opens up briefly, with stretches of flattish water, but the respite is brief. The gradient steepens and the stream carves the Box, where 1200-foot walls tower above the water. The rapids range from Class IV- Class VI, and so should be attempted only by very experienced kayakers.
For those who would rather not risk the rapids, a trail runs along the north shore and can be explored for about 20 miles. The trailhead is off the Chief Joseph Scenic Highway, near a Forest Service campground.
Location: From Crandall Creek Bridge downstream 20.5 miles to the north boundary of Section 13, T56N, R104W at Clarks Fork Canyon.

Upper Reaches to Pilot Creek: inaccessible/waterfalls/class VI
Beartooth Highway to Chief Joseph Highway at Muddy Creek: flatwater/ Class I & II/put in from either highway
Muddy Creek to Crandall Creek: too technical for rafts/ Class IV whitewater
Crandall Creek - The Box: Class V & VI whitewater
The Box to Lower Clarks Fork:whitewater/ Class IV; this is the most popular section and can be accessed from a jeep road off FR 119/120.
Lower Clarks Fork: flatwater/Class I & II; suitable for rafting and canoeing.
