Description: This drive through the high desert of the Tushar Mountains offers unusual scenery, with alternating fields of lava and alpine meadows. The road itself ranges from 6000 to 11000 feet, and provides views of mountain peaks still higher. Mule deer are common along the drive, and in the autumn, the aspens give a lovely golden display.
The drive itself has two forks, which both return to UT-153 and on to Beaver. The southern road, FR 137, leads to three campgrounds near reservoirs. The northern road, FR 514 passes Puffer Reservoir and Mirror Lake, and through a historic mining district. It also passes by the Elk Meadows Ski Area. Both routes access the Paiute ATV trail. Watch out for ATV traffic!
Location: From the town of Junction, on US-89, go northwest on UT-153 and Big John Flat Road (Forest Roads 514 & 123) until you end at the town of Beaver, on UT-160. One way trip is 40 miles and takes about 3 hours.
