Description: The 23,850 acres of this wilderness encompass the Wellsville Mountains, billed as the steepest mountains in the United States. Their rugged slopes, cut by deep canyons, rise to a peak elevation of 9372 feet at the summit of Box Elder Peak. The western side is too rugged to hike easily, and there are no developed trails. There are three developed trails on the eastern side, which traverse the main ridge, interconnect, and lead to the summits of Wellsville Cone and Box Elder Creek. There is very little water along these trails, so pack in what you will need. This wilderness is home to a number of recovering wildlife populations, including raptors, bighorn sheep, moose, deer, and mountain lions.
Location: Trailheads at Deep Canyon and Maple Bench can be accessed off UT-23 north of Wellsville.
