Wyoming State Parks & Monuments
Within Wyoming's boundaries is an extremely valuable collection of natural, historical, and cultural resources that are designated state parks and historic sites. Although small in size and less developed than those of surrounding states, Wyoming parks and historic sites offer significant opportunities, including 11 state parks, a state recreation area, 12 major historic sites and two state archaeological/petroglyph sites. In addition, over 650 monuments and markers commemorating the horizons of Wyoming's history are maintained by the program.

Wyoming state parks and historic sites range in size from one acre to 39,000 acres and serve over two million visitors each year. For an excellent virtual tour and lots of information about Wyoming state parks and historic sites, please visit the Wyoming state parks website.

Wyoming Wildlife & Waterfowl Management Areas
The Wyoming Game and Fish Commission is charged with managing Wyoming's wildlife resources and protecting populations. This includes operating several hatcheries state wide to support lake and stream fishing. Wildlife areas and game refuges are set aside for the propagation and protection of game species, including managing wetlands for migratory waterfowl habitat and nesting, and designating winter feeding grounds for large mammals. Hunting, fishing, and other recreational activities are usually allowed on these lands.

For additional information about the Wyoming Game and Fish Commission, and for hunting and fishing regulations, education classes, and permitting information, please visit the Wyoming Game and Fish website.

Wyoming State Trust Lands
The "Trust Lands" are those lands granted by the federal government to the State of Wyoming under various acts of the U.S. Congress. These lands, including the mineral resources, and the permanent fund which they have generated, are reserved for the sole benefit of the public schools and certain other designated public institutions in Wyoming. These lands are a unique form of public lands -- they are leased and sold to private parties in order to generate revenue for the communal good. In Wyoming, State Trust Lands cover 3.6 million acres.

Public access to Trust Lands for recreational use is permitted when such use does not damage or diminish the health and productivity of the land nor interfere with the legitimate rights of the existing lessee. The State Land Commission, in an effort to conserve the resources of these lands, is considering developing them for recreation and charging access fees. Educational uses of the Trust Lands such as school study sites, research activities and field trips, are not be subject to any fees.
