Montana State Trust Lands
The "Trust Lands" are those lands granted by the federal government to the State of Montana under various acts of the U.S. Congress. These lands, including the mineral resources, and the permanent fund which they have generated, are reserved for the sole benefit of the public schools, the universities, and certain other designated public institutions in Montana. These lands are a unique form of public lands -- they are leased and sold to private parties in order to generate revenue for the communal good, while keeping in mind environmental sustainability. In Montana, State Trust Lands cover a little more than five million acres.

Legally accessible state trust lands may be used for recreational activities by persons who hold state land recreational use licenses, provided the lands are not closed or restricted for such use by rule or by the department. General recreation licenses are available from all FWP and DNRC area offices. Educational uses of the Trust Lands such as school study sites, research activities and field trips, are not be subject to any fees.

Hunting, fishing, and other recreational activities are usually allowed on these lands.
